New Stories from Fairwood Alumni

If you're looking for some great new stories to read, check out what our alumni have been up to!


The April issue of Hybrid Fiction is a Fairwood two-fer. First up, a new science-fantasy short from Harold Gross, "Short-Handed," which shares the table of contents with the second part of Rhiannon Held's serialized weird western. "After the Warding" starts here, in the March issue.

If you're interested in reading more of Rhiannon's recent work, take a look at her story, "Truth as a Prize," in Beneath Ceaseless Skies' packed science-fantasy issue in March. And you'll want to pick up the brand-new ebook of her space-opera novella, Clean Install, so you'll be ready for the sequel, Dirty Burnout, coming soon!

We're all cheering for Corry L. Lee's first novel, a fantasy with a Russian-inspired setting, elemental magic and great characters! Weave the Lightning, published earlier this month, is available in trade paperback and ebook. Don't miss it!






And finally, we somehow missed the publication of Kate Alice Marshall's spooky YA novel, Rules for Vanishing, back in the fall--but we might have been the only ones not paying attention, seeing as it was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Young Adult Novel! Kate was up against a tough field when the awards were announced this month, but just being nominated is a superior achievement. Congratulations, Kate!

New Story from Rhiannon Held

Fairwood alum Rhiannon Held, writing as R.Z. Held, has a new story in the latest issue of Beneath Ceaseless Skies. "Swimming Apart" focuses on the bond of friendship, featuring treasure-hunting in underwater caves, and is Rhiannon's second BCS story after last year's "Red Dreams."

Wrapping Up a Series

Fairwood alum and professional archaeologist Rhiannon Held celebrates the release of the fifth and final book in her urban fantasy series with an added musical treat.

Death-Touched, now available in print and e-book, wraps up the Silver series about the Roanoke Pack of werewolves that began in 2010 with Silver.  Throughout the series Rhiannon explores the concept of werewolves with their own religion and folk songs.

To accompany this final volume, Rhiannon has also released an in-world folk song, "The Lady's Light," with her lyrics from the series and music by Seattle composer Mitchell Fund.

Rhiannon Held's New Book, Reading

Rhiannon Held's been productive, with four novels in her well-reviewed Silver series released in the last few years. Now she's set her sights on new horizons. Her latest novel, Hound and Key, is an urban fantasy set in outside the world of Silver. She'll be reading and signing at University Bookstore on Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm.

 Key has lived her entire life in captivity, forced to use her magic to kill the enemies of Ariadne, an ageless woman with powerful magic of her own. Key knows she and Ariadne are both members of the Hand of the Gods, five souls reborn through the ages, but Key remembers none of her past lives. She chafes against Ariadne's control, and longs to escape to lead a life of her own. 

Rhiannon Held Reading

Rhiannon Held has a reading coming up for the fourth book in her SILVER series, WOLFSBANE. It will be at the University Bookstore on September 30, at 7 pm, downstairs. Come and hear a selection from the new book and get your questions answered afterwards at the Q&A!

If you can't make it to the reading, the book will be released on September 29. You can preorder the epub or Kindle version, or check back in on Amazon on that day for the print version! (Createspace, sadly, doesn't do preorders).

Two New Stories from Rhiannon Held

Legacy Fairwood Member Rhiannon Held has two short stories out, set in the world of her Silver novels! They're available in Kindle and .epub formats, and best of all, they're both free. If you like werewolves, take a look.

Temper: Hoping for a relaxing vacation to roam and get over a bad break-up, Tom instead finds something incredibly dangerous for all werewolves: a cemetery with Were secrets engraved on the stones for any human to see. When a couple of young werewolves from the Billings pack interfere with his plans to take care of the problem, it gets hard for him to keep his anger in check.

Back a Winner: Pierce must soon give his alpha an answer whether he will accept a position of Seattle pack beta, but he can’t bring himself to decide. At the track, memories haunt him, throwing his fear into sharp relief.

Short story in Silver universe

Legacy Fairwood member Rhiannon Held has a new short story out in the world of her novels! Set in the background of her third book in the Silver universe, it's designed to be accessible to anyone familiar with any of the books. Take a look!

Reflected Now Out

Reflected, the third novel in Rhiannon's Silver series, is now in print, and you can get it at bookstores everywhere.  And if you're too excited to wait that long, get it for your eBook reader from your favorite eBook store.

We really love the cover, though.  Check it out!

So feel free to also buy the hardcopy to display on your coffee table, or show off the general awesomeness of your reading material to everyone else on the bus.

Anthology News

Look for Fairwood members Renee Stern and Rhiannon Held in two new anthologies!


 

Gears and Levers 3, a steampunk anthology edited by Phyllis Irene Radford, includes 14 stories from Rhiannon Louve, David Boop, Renee Stern and others.

 
We hope you'll enjoy Renee's entry, "Backs to the Wall," featuring Mother Jones, Pinkertons and coal-mining automatons.

Published by Sky Warrior Books, the anthology is available from Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble.







 

And Rhiannon takes a break from werewolves with a story about dryads appearing in the anthology Urban Green Man from Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy.


Featuring an introduction by Charles de Lint, the anthology contains Rhiannon's story "Green Apples" and 30 other tales dealing with renewal surrounding the mythology of the Green Man.

Fairwooder Rhiannon Held sold her urban fantasy novel "Silver" and two sequels to editor Beth Meacham at Tor books. Congratulations, Rhiannon!! 

As described in the Publisher's Marketplace, "the local pack enforcer finds a battered and crazed werewolf in his territory and must unite the isolated and insular North American packs and take a hard look at his own dark past to piece together what happened and keep it from happening again."

The Fairwood Writers read the novel in an earlier version so we're fully qualified to that "Silver" is a great read, populated by great characters and packed with plot.
